Finding Serenity in a time of Anxiety
The work consists of two golden rope pulleys, a cloud of white pillows and an duvet tied together and suspended by means of cotton rope. Sounding from the cloud, hovering 15cm above the floor when in a natural state, is a recording of the breathing and sounds of people sleeping. Drooling painted onto the pillows is further indication of a sense of deep sleep.
The work hinges on a tension between the perceived lightness of the “dream cloud” and the heavy duty pulleys as mechanical devices to lift a heavy load. By tugging lightly on the rope coiled on the floor, the viewer gets a first-hand experience of the weight of sleep. In order to sleep peacefully, the subconscious has to ward off numerous anxieties, fears and threats.
