New Voices, a group exhibition by a New Curator
28 November 2012– 30 January 2013
Every year Artspace gallery presents a dynamic group exhibition to celebrate the Festive Season by showcasing the work of a wide range of creative & talented visual artists. This year sees the launch of a new yearend exhibition concept that the gallery plans to become an annual showcase.
Curated by young artist and first time curator Ronél de Jager, the exhibition is a showcase of new artists emerging on the contemporary South African art scene.
“Artspace is often approached by new, emerging, young artists for an opportunity to showcase their work to the public.” Titled New Voices, “this exhibition aims to promote and showcase the next generation of talented new artists who have started to emerge through various industry channels such as competitions and the many diverse projects that allow new artists to start building their profile in the market”, says de Jager.
The exhibition will feature a selection of new media and traditional media works. Each piece has been selected as a key work of the artists’ oeuvre at this stage in their careers.
The works on show bring new perspectives to universal debates of environmentalism and identity while the artists negotiate their place in the contemporary visual arts sector in South Africa.
De Jager studied towards a BTech (FA) degree at the Tshwane University of Technology and joined the Artspace team in December 2007 as Gallery Assistant. Currently employed as Gallery Manager, De Jager has been cutting her teeth assisting Artspace’s curator Teresa Lizamore with ongoing exhibitions and projects. This exhibition is her curatorial debut after five years of engagement in the contemporary art market in South Africa.
The exhibition opens 28 November – 15 December 2012 and re-opens on 12 January – 30 January 2013 at Artspace, 1 Chester Court, 142 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood, Rosebank.
