(On)rus / (Un)rest references the evanescent properties of light and shadow, both physically and metaphorically. It stems from very personal conditions of trauma which coincided with an acute awareness of the diffused world of shadows. Shadows came to embody moments of silence, flux, transition and change. It allowed a point of access; an awareness of what lies beneath the surface - ever present yet escaping definition.
The painted surface is ultimately where tensions between form and formlessness and conscious and subconscious realms are played out. Captured through a process of filtering and refiltering, shadows embedded in paint became the site of a process of transformation, of working through trauma. At once abstract and recognisable, photographic and painterly, the layered surface registers a physical engagement with the psyche. It becomes a trace of the real, refigured and re-enacted - a link to a world both present and absent, simultaneously formed and diffused by the play of light.
